T-Mobile LG G-Slate Promotion

To help promote the new LG G-Slate 4G Tablet, T-Mobile has used an image I shot of the Golden Greys as a screen shot for the device. Obviously, a photograph taken with a Nikon D3 is not a streaming video of a local Seattle band on an LG G-Slate; but hey, it's marketing.

You can find these posters, banners, murals and standees in T-Mobile stores nationwide now through June.

Doe Bay Festival 2010

So, yeah, I'm a lazy bastard and just finally got done working on my Doe Bay Festival photos from last August.

I'll be honest, I could have gotten these done much, much sooner. I did work a few hours on these back in August and in October and January, and finally wrapped them up last night.

Hey Marseilles

The 2010 edition was like an slightly expanded version of 2009, which was one of my favorite concert-going experiences of my lifetime.

There were a few holdover bands from the previous year, like Hey Marseilles, the Maldives and Drew Grow and the Pastors' Wives who performed the now legendary performance in the hot and humid yoga studio to be the surprise of the festival last year.

Drew Grow was on the main stage this year and was joined by Kelli Schaefer or a few songs.

Don Slack

Don Slack was back again as the MC and introduced the bands to the main stage. Some of the new bands for 2010 were:
the Fruit Bats
Fences
Black Whales
Grand Hallway
Zoe Muth and the High Rollers
Kimo Muraki
the Portland Cello Project (who told a funny story of their t-shirts modeled after the "I (heart) NY" with "I (heart) PCP")

The Maldives

This year's festival had a slightly more cohesive vibe as the community of fans and artists bonded over impromptu forest performances, carrot cake cupcakes and a makeshift slip and slide.

The Fruit Bats

If the notion of attending this year's festival is even a tingle in the back of your mind, pounce on it, and pounce on it soon. This will sell out fast.

New Year, New Layout

It's been quite awhile since I revamped my web presence so I felt that with the start of the new year, that I should update my layout a touch.

Here is what the old site looked like:

The biggest change is that the the message board is now transparent which allows me to put one of my images in the background.

The first image I've chosen to place in the background is from the Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile that I took back in February 2008. I may change out the background image from time to time, and I like having that option.

Let me know what you think of the new layout and if you have any suggestions for further improvement.

New Years at Olympic National Park

Spent the New Year in Olympic National Park with my girlfriend.

We stayed at the Kalaloch Lodge Cabins on the Pacific Ocean.

The amazing new management at the Columbia City Theater have been hard at work renovating the lovely old place. They let me come in last week to take some VR photos of their progress. My Olympic Run

While visiting the Winter Olympics this past weekend, I took the opportunity to get a good run in through downtown Vancouver. I left my friend's place around 9am and headed further into the city. About half way through the run, I saw the Olympic Flame on the waterfront and ran down that way to take in the Olympic Spirit. Seeing the flame must have really charged me up, because I ran a solid 7 minute pace for the run.

Doe Bay Festival Announces Lineup

Artist Home Booking just announced the first batch of bands for this year's Doe Bay Festival being held August 13th and 14th up on Orcas Island.

This was such a good time last year, I already am making my plans to return. The setting is so intimate for a festival packed with this many great bands. As my friend Philip called it last year, it's a "spirit hike".

Mid-September Music Madness in Portland at MusicFestNW

As seen on Three Imaginary Girls:

Imaginary Chona and I tag-teamed MusicFestNW with her resident reviewer, RJ, recently. I covered the first few days and she hit the last few days due to some circumstances of her being "cursed" until Saturday. Somehow, she broke the curse and I believe has photos posted on the site.

I made it down to Portland just in time to see Hey Marseilles a few songs into their set at the Ash Street Saloon. Apparently there were some sound problems early, but they were cleared by the time I arrived. The boys told me that they felt that the performance was a bit lackluster at first, but they made an unspoken group decision to just "rock the fuck out" for the rest of the set...and it turned out to be fantastic. The crowd really took to the Seattle Seven and promptly complied when lead-singer, Matt Bishop, asked them to get closer to the stage.

The Black Whales followed and kept the crowd from thinning out too much with their well crafted poppy sound. I've seen these guys a few times now and am excited to check them out again. I am eagerly awaiting their upcoming release.

The rest of the night consisted of Derby and the Dimes, who were good, but the crowd had abated by the time they started and I'd hit my limit of working, driving, shooting all day.

On Friday, I went down to the Doug Fir to catch some of the KEXP live broadcasts. Unfortunately, the Arctic Monkeys set was closed, and Sunny Day Real Estate had to cancel due to illness. I still had a chance to catch the Builders & the Butchers and Chairlift. After those sessions was an early evening show at the Wonder Ballroom with the Arctic Monkeys, with opening act, the Like. Sadly, even my super-duper press pass and photo pass was not good enough to allow me in with my camera to this show, so you're stuck with the really cruddy cell phone pics that I was able to take. The Like are an all female band from Los Angeles who had some pretty fun songs, but might be hard to take for 40 minutes straight. I'd throw their stuff into a mix and shuffle, once their album is released.

The Arctic Monkeys on the other hand, kicked ass. They are one of my favourite bands and they played for over an hour. Alex Turner and co. had the crowd wrapped around their fingers as they played decidely loud renditions of their songs. One curiosity I noticed was that they had nearly a dozen guitars with them, and would often switch them out between songs. They ended their pre-encore set with my favourite of their songs, "Do Me a Favour" that ends with the line, "perhaps fuck off might be too kind". I had to jet at that point to get across town to my next show...

The Long Winters, Viva Voce, Rocky Votolato and Say Hi at Berbati's Pan. Say Hi played a solid set, and seemed to win over some new fans.

Rocky played a fairly stripped down set, solely on acoustic guitar and harmonica.

Local to Portland, Viva Voce seemed to light up the crowd the most. Kevin Robinson taking to smashing his guitar on the stage near the end of the set.

Sadly, I was so exhausted by this point, I reluctantly retreated for the door to head back to the hotel. However, right outside I ran into John Roderick and Eric Corson of the Long Winters. After apoligizing that I'd be missing their show, they posed for some candids along with Justin of Menemona for me. And with that, I headed back with my travel companion leaving the rest of the weekend to the no-longer-cursed Chona.

I shot the three day festival for KEXP and got to avoid the worst of the elements by shooting in the Music Lounge on Sunday where they were broadcasting live performances (see post below for those photos).

Doe Bay Spirit Hike

The Second Annual Doe Bay Festival was a magical experience up on Orcas Island. A music festival like no other, and likely the closest thing to the free-loving style of the 60's that I'm likely to experience.

the Long Winters

As noted in the Doe Bay Bible, festival program, it was 40 years ago that Woodstock introduced the Rock Festival to the World. However, not as widely known, there was a large festival that predates it by a year...and it was right here in the Seattle area. The Sky River Rock Festival, held in Skykomish in 1967 featuring the likes of Santana and an unscheduled appearance by the Grateful Dead.

Joe Bay

The Doe Bay Festival was put together by Joe Brotherton, also known as "Joe Bay", and featured the Long Winters, the Lonely Forest, the Maldives, Hey Marseilles, the Moondoggies, Slender Means and many more...in a communal-type setting where the performers and the concert-goers freely mingled.

Unlike the famous festivals of yore, the skies threatened, but it never rained. Over two days, performer after performer graced the stage with a back drop of green trees, blue skies and white clouds.

Much like those mythic festivals of the past, there was nakedness - only this time it was confined to the clothing optional hot tubs (and likely to the tents and cabins as well).

I spent much of my non-photographing time hanging out with the performers and found them to all be down to Earth and friendly people - which is exactly the type of people that this festival attracts. I texted one about hiking at Doe Bay and he returned: "Spirit hike...spirit hike..."

On my return trip home, I stopped by to visit my mother and tell her about the incredible experience I'd just had. She replied that she had in fact been to the Sky River Rock Festival, experienced the rain and the nakedness, and upon returning to her '56 Buick - found that people had sought refuge from the torrents inside. Who knew my mom was so cool? Thankfully, 41 years later, nobody had to shack up in my car.

Sadly, I wasn't as motivated as I should have been due to the expected heat and some press access issues on Friday which prevented getting to decent shooting positions. That put me in a funk for Saturday that I just couldn't get out of, even though the temperature was much cooler than forecasted and the stage access was corrected.

Hey Marseilles in B&W at the Crocodile - May 29th, 2009

Hey Marseilles in Black & White due to the crap-lighting at the Crocodile.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Croc...but you've got a whole array of lights there...USE THEM!!

Nearly every show I've been to is a tepid mix of low-intensity blues, reds and greens that change 2-3 times per set. This looks like hell when you're there and even worse through a lens. Everybody on stage looks like a friggen' zombie. I've seen Chop Suey throw up an amazing display with 1/4 of the lighting power.

Proper lighting at a show can make a good performance great! Set the mood. Get the crowd energized. Pump up the intensity a bit. Change it up. Treat it like a light show. Use the spot lights that are tucked in the corners, sitting up there forgotten. Light up the faces of the performers...and as a rare treat - light up the drummer from time to time - I know they'd appreciate that.

Ah, it feels good to be home. I just spent the last week-and-a-half down in our neighbor to the South, Oregon - photographing the Columbia River Gorge. Click on any of the photos below to view the Flickr Gallery.

My friend Diane came up from Colorado for this photography workshop through the Rocky Mountain School of Photography.

We spent the week waking before sunrise to shoot in early morning light at some of the most beautiful locations in the Pacific Northwest. Mid-day would consist of lectures and photo critiques (in a very frigid meeting room) before we would head back out on hikes to waterfalls and to scout good sunset spots.

The first morning we went out to shoot at the Rowena Plateau, where Mazda shot one of their "Zoom! Zoom!" commercials on the super-twisty sections of the Historic Columbia River Highway.

After hiking up to a scenic spot with views of both Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams for sunrise, I took a short nap in the morning sun. When we got back to the hotel, I went out for a run through Hood River. I finished the run and was readying to shower I noticed that I had a passenger with me from the plateau.

I had been bitten by a tick - so if I'm dead in a few weeks, you'll know why. My friend had to pull that little sucker out with some tweezers, and it took 3 strong tugs to get him.

Other than that bit of excitement, the trip was your standard fare of beautiful scenery, hiking to waterfalls, and getting to know a few more photography nerds. All in all, it was a great worthwhile program and I made some new friends.

After the workshop ended, Diane and I headed down to Crater Lake National Park. I'll be doing a new post with photos as soon as they are ready.

My first show review and photo submission was for Three Imaginary Girls, in coordination with Universal Music Group/Interscope Records.

Just as the show got underway, a woman who had been pressed up against the crowd-control gate passed out. Some folks in the front of the audience got my attention and helped me and the security personnel pull the woman out.

The song limit was just two, so, I had to act quickly.

Black Mountain played a fuzzed-out set to a sold out crowd last Friday at Neumo's. The lighting was really tough and was never very bright. I did what I could to get these ten to come out.

Hey Marseilles played a birthday shin-dig at the Fremont Abbey last Friday for a friend of theirs.

They invited me along to try my hand at some VR photography of the band while performing (hence the fish-eye). I'm still working with those images to see if they'll work.

It was a really fun show and they are playing again this Friday (tomorrow night) at the Tractor in Ballard. Later this month, they head off to Austin for SXSW.

This Friday, I'm returning to one of my favourite places for a long weekend in New York City.

This being my third trip to the city in three years, I plan on rounding out my inventory of photographs and hope to put something together with them later this year.

On my last visit I was able to catch games at both Shea and Yankee Stadiums; which I will recall as one of the great live experiences for the baseball fan in me (along with the Mariners 1995 single elimination playoff win over the Angels in the King Dome).

Sadly, Shea has been disassembled to the point that only one small section of the ramp-way remains. I will be posting photographs from my May visit as a tribute in the coming weeks.

Yankee Stadium is still standing, but not for long. This trip, I have plans to head up to the Bronx to get some exterior shots of the building. Photos from my previous two visits to Yankee Stadium (oddly enough, both games were vs. the Seattle Mariners) are available by clicking the stadium photo above.

I have so many things on my agenda for this trip that it will be hard to fit it all in. I do know that I want to hit some key photography spots along with Yankee Stadium: Grand Central, Chrysler Building, the Guggenheim, NYC Public Library, DUMBO, Wall Street, Atlas Statue, Washington Square Park, Central Park, and the B&H Superstore.

As always, I'll make an effort to visit Cafe Grumpy (reviews) as often as I can. I absolutely love that place, and it's one of the few places in the city to get fantastic coffee. Fortunately, the play I'm attending on Friday is only one block away.

Apple LED Cinema Display (24" flat panel) will NOT WORK with any previous generation Mac

In one of the more absurd things I've encountered recently; Apple's new display does not support an existing base of millions of users who have purchased their products as recently as 90 days ago.

I contacted an Apple Expert who advised me to provide feedback to Apple.

My "Feedback" to Apple:

This really isn't an issue with the Macbook Pro as it is an issue with the new Apple LED Cinema Display's (24" flat panel) inability to function with anything but the most recent generation of computers.

The idea that an existing base of millions of users who have recently purchased Apple Computers beyond 90 days ago are already outdated to the point that a seemingly great new product is not compatible for them - at all - is quite disturbing.

The Apple Store does not explicitly state that this product will not work with any previous generation Mac - and it should be updated as such.

To launch a product with ONLY a non-adopted "new standard" without any level of support for the most recent options for connectivity is reckless and I find it hard to believe that Apple overlooked this.

So, it must have been a conscious decision to launch this product in this manner, without even a viable adapter as an option. The logic behind that, I wish I could understand. It certainly couldn't be to sell more laptops, forcing a "refresh" upon people.

I was advised by an Apple Expert in a chat to provide my feedback and suggest that an adapter be created that will make the 24" display compatible with my early 2008-purchased MacBook Pro. Is such an adapter going to be available soon?

New Year's Eve with DeVotchKa at the Showbox

Happy New Year everybody!

KEXP sponsored DeVotchKa at the Showbox for New Year's Eve this year and I got to shoot it. The place was packed, with many revelers well past three sheets before 9pm (that's a nod to you Cap'n).

The crowd seemed to move at the whim of Shawn King's drumming, the wooden floor of the Showbox flexing with the unison movement.

Nick Urata played out to the crowd singing into his old-fashioned microphone, and many sang right along with him.

The show was fantastic! The opener, Norfolk & Western from Portland was also quite good.

2009 Goals

Goal setting is one of those exercises that many self-improvement gurus swear by. I can see the benefits of having a goal direct the actions that you do in order to achieve them.

So, not to be on a soap-box or anything, but I wanted to share my goals for the upcoming year. Some of these are super-nerdy, but hey, sometimes you're just going to have the expect that from me.

Goals, in no particular order:
1) Qualify for the Boston Marathon (under 3 hours 10 minutes)
2) Maintain zero alcohol consumption during training
3) Run in two Full Marathons
4) Run in three 1/2 Marathons (run at least one in under 90 minutes)
5) Travel to the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu
6) Visit four U.S. National Parks
7) Publish three more photography books
8) Establish quarterly photography sessions with my niece, nephew and brother's new baby to be named later
9) Photograph for at least two additional Media Outlets in addition to KEXP
10) Complete a photography project that raises awareness and funds for a good cause (TBD)
11) Save 30% of income
12) Reduce spending by 30%
13) Create web galleries for photos dating back to 2005
14) Exceed 10,000 unique visits to my website
15) Increase maximum weightlifting capacity by 30%
16) Consistently plays the drums in Rock Band 2 on "Hard" difficulty setting
17) Exceed sales quota at work by 10%
18) Listen to my body and take care of it to reduce injury. There's a fine line between tough and stupid and I've crossed it too many times already.
19) Hold two exhibitions of my work
20) Continue education by attending at least one intensive photography workshop and learn InDesign
21) Utilize my clothing storage options in my room so that I may actually have floor space
22) Be open to possibility...

I know that many of these will all take a lot of time and effort to accomplish, so I'll need to be vigilant throughout the year. Happy New Year to all of you!

R.I.P. Yankee Stadium 1923-2008

As most baseball fans know....this is the final season for both MLB teams' stadiums in New York City. Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium are both in their final seasons before the teams move into new state-of-the-art digs across the street from their current home fields. I was fortunate enough to make the trek to see the "House that Ruth Built" and where the "Miracle Mets" made history.

Last Sunday was the last game to be played at Yankee Stadium. I had the opportunity to visit the stadium twice in the past year.

United Way Day of Caring

I donated my services to the United Way of King County during their Day Of Caring Wrap Party. They held a banquet and concert to reward the over 8,000 volunteers that worked to serve the community.

Beck Interview Photos

This year's Bumbershoot was one of the best in recent memory and the first night headliner was Beck. He invited KEXP onto his tour bus for an interview and I was the photographer.

He was very nice and down to earth. You can tell he listens to what you're saying because he'll process it for a second and then offer an eloquent response.

I felt extra nerdy when I chatted with him at the end of the interview to talk about the festival and I handed him one of my business cards...just in case you need a tour photographer Mr. Hansen.

Scott & Kimberly's Wedding VR Photograph

So, I don't shoot weddings for a number of personal reasons (granted, I have done a few for friends and family after much begging and telling them to hire someone else as well as have me there), but my friend Scott asked me for something rather unique.

Scott has seen my website and likes the VR photography that I've done, mostly for architectural work and asked if I would do one for his wedding. The idea being that when you're actually in the wedding, sweatin' ballz, trying to focus on the moment, not flubbing your lines and crying - it would be nice to be able to look back on that moment and take a look around. Optimus Rhyme has completed their mission...

My good friends in Optimus Rhyme have officially completed their mission and played their final show together.

I met these fools back in 2006 while they were playing and winning the Emerging Artists Award at the Redhook Brewery's summer outdoor movie performances. Being the friendly guys they are, they took some time to chat about the photos I was taking at the event and subsequently invited me to shoot more shows...and the rest they say, is history.

Sirs; Wheelie, Thighs, Grimmy and Stumblebee, I thank you for the great music, the good times and most importantly, the friendship you've all shared with me these past few years. Best of luck in your future pursuits and let's keep causing trouble... ;-)

Blown away by Hey Marseilles

I finally made it out to see Hey Marseilles after some friends of mine had been suggesting them for quite awhile. Holy shit! They are good.

Last night was the CD release for their debut album To Travels & Trunks

I didn't bring my camera as I wanted to first experience the band as a spectator, and all I can say is wow.

There are 7 musicians up on the stage, working the crowd into a folkestra frenzy, and they don't miss a beat.

Highly recommended...I expect to be hearing more about this band, much more.

No more Siberian

Sadly, one of my favorite local bands has decided to call it quits. Siberian played the Seattle scene for the past four years and had a really great sound.

The scheduled show at Chop Suey this Friday has been canceled as well...

Thanks for the great run, wish I could've seen you play one last time.

2008 KEXP BBQ!

Holy crap! That was an awesome show...

The KEXP BBQ seems to get better every year.

KEXP's Sixth Annual BBQ featured the Dandy Warhols, Joseph Arthur and the Lonely Astronauts, the Helio Sequence, Common Market, the Saturday Knights, the Dexter Street Stompers Jug Band and a torrential rain storm (by Seattle standards)..

Granted, this year there was a minor monsoon during Common Market's set, but the crowd hung in there, hiding under tables, in tents and under umbrellas.

An amazing rainbow even made an appearance.
